The Benefits of Lean To Greenhouses
February 4th, 2010There are so many ways that lean to greenhouses can positively impact the lives of their owners. Here, and throughout this site, we’ll be exploring how and why this type of greenhouse is a great option for any home.
And speaking of the home is a great place to start when addressing what makes a lean to so desirable. You see, unlike other greenhouses, lean to greenhouses truly become a part of the home, and that’s because they are! As the name implies, lean to’s are designed to lean up against something. And more often than not, this ends up being a rear wall of a home or building. In this way, the greenhouse becomes a part of the home, and vice versa. Now, no one wants the dirty image of the inside of a greenhouse to be associated with the way they want to feel when they’re inside their home. But that isn’t the effect that is accomplished.
By making the greenhouse a part of one’s home, the owner can more easily feel a sense of connection, or whatever you want to call it, with that which he or she is growing just outside. And there are practical benefits as well. For one, your house will give off heat when you are spending money to heat the interior. Though the amount will be small, you may as well share some of this wasted energy with the seedlings you are attempting to nurture through infancy. Furthermore, if you intend on outfitting your greenhouse with other utilities, such as water, access will be that much handier. Simply run a hose (or pipe, if available) from your home into your greenhouse. Much easier than irrigating a separate structure.
It wouldn’t be fair to list the upsides to lean to greenhouses without at least touching on some of the drawbacks. But, for what it’s worth, I consider only one argument against them to have much merit. Read the rest of this entry »
